Overview
The Governor plays a critical role in certifying statewide races. They otherwise play a limited role in the post-election process. However, they do have some key emergency powers and the ability to appoint people to fill certain vacancies.
Election-Related Duties
The key duties of the Governor are:
- Issuing certificates of election. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.395(3).
- Resolving ties in Secretary of State primary races. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.400(1)(b).
- Appointing replacements to fill vacancies on the District Court. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 3.080(2).
- Appointing replacements to fill vacancies on Boards of County Commissioners. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 244.040(1).
- Appointing a replacement to fill a vacancy in the office of the Attorney General. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 8.
- Declaring emergencies and carrying out emergency provisions. Nev. Rev. Stat. §§ 414.060-070.
Election and Vacancy Information
- **Elected: ****The Governor is elected by statewide plurality every four years. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 2.
- Tiebreaking: **Ties in gubernatorial races are broken by a vote of both legislatures. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.400(1)(a).
- Term of Office: The Governor is elected to four-year terms and is limited to two terms. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 3.
- Next Election: The next gubernatorial election will be held on November 3, 2026.
- Qualifications: An individual must be at least 25 years old and a resident of Nevada for at least two years prior to the election. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 3.
- Vacancy: Upon vacancy, all duties devolve to the Lieutenant Governor. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 18.
