Overview
The Secretary of State is the state’s chief election officer. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.124(1). They are responsible for the “execution and enforcement” of election laws in the state of Nevada. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.124(1).
Election-Related Duties
The key duties of the Secretary of State are:
- Issuing rules and regulations and election guidance. Nev. Rev. Stat. §§ 293.124(2), 293.247(4).
- Canvassing the vote (with justices of the State Supreme Court) Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.395(2).
- Approving training of local election officials on issues such as signature verification and cybersecurity. Nev. Rev. Stat. Ann. §§ 293.875(1), 293.877.

Selection and Vacancy Information
- **Elected: ****The Secretary of State is elected to four-year terms. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 19(1) (referencing § 2).
- Tiebreaking: Ties are broken by a vote of both legislatures. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.400(1)(a).
- Term of Office: The Secretary of State is elected every four years during the gubernatorial election and is limited to two terms. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 19.
- Next Election: The next election for Secretary of State will be held on November 3, 2026.
- Qualifications: Any qualified voter in the state of Nevada is eligible to hold this office. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 19(2).
- Vacancy: If there is a vacancy, the Governor will appoint a replacement. Nev. Const. Art. V, § 8.
