Election-Related Duties
The key duties of the Board of County Commissioners are:
- Conducting the county canvass. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.387(1).
- Creating an abstract of the vote totals for the County Clerk. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.387(3). [1]
- Chairing the Recount Board. In recounts when the election is for a County Clerk and there is no Registrar of Voters in the County, the Chair of the Board of County Commissioners serves as Chair of the Recount Board. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.404(1)(a).
- Ordering new elections in precincts where ballots are destroyed. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.465.
- Appointing a Registrar of Voters, in counties with more than 100,000 residents. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 244.164(1).
Selection and Vacancy Information
- **Elected: ****Members of the Board of County Commissioners are elected every four years. Nev. Rev. Stat. §§ 244.010-027.
- Makeup: The number of members on the Board of County Commissioners depends on the size of the county. Nev. Rev. Stat. §§ 244.010-027. The largest counties in Nevada, Clark and Washoe, have seven members. Each member of the Board of County Commissioners represents a district within the county. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 244.016.
- Tiebreaking: If the county does not have its own tiebreaking rules, then the County Clerk breaks ties for elections to the Board of County Commissioners by lot. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 293.400(1)(c).
- Term of Office: Members of the Board of County Commissioners serve four-year terms. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 244.030. Members of the Board of County Commissioners may serve a maximum of 12 years. Nev. Const. Art. XV, § 3(2).
- Next Election: The next election will be held on November 5, 2024.
- Qualifications and Restrictions: Any qualified voter can be elected to the Board of County Commissioners for their county, as long as they do not concurrently serve in another county officer role. Nev. Rev. Stat. § 244.020.
