The Nevada Legislature has a key role in the adjudication of contested elections for certain offices.
Election-Related Duties
The key duties of the Nevada Legislature are:
- Deciding contests of elections for state-level offices or judges and justices. Nev. Rev. Stat. §§ 293.427-433.
While some election contests are decided by the judiciary, others are decided by the Nevada Legislature, by either one body or both bodies in joint session. For more information see Contests.
Selection and Vacancy Information
- **Elected: ****Members of the Assembly are elected every two years. Nev. Const. Art. IV, § 3. Members of the Senate are elected every four years. Nev. Const. Art. IV, § 4.
- Term of Office: Assembly members serve two-year terms and members of the Senate serve four-year terms. Both are restricted to 12 years in that office. Nev. Const. Art. IV, § 3-4.
- Next Election: Both chambers will have elections to fill their body on November 5, 2024.
- Qualifications: They must be registered to vote in the district that they represent. Nev. Const. Art. IV, § 5.
- Vacancy: The County Commissioners from the county where the vacancy occurs appoint a replacement of the same political party. Nev. Const. Art. IV, § 12.
